A Comprehensive Approach to Preventing Chronic Disease

Six in 10 adults have a chronic disease, while four in 10 adults have two or more chronic disease conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Chronic diseases and mental health conditions account for 90 percent of the $3.9 trillion spent on health care in the United States,” explained Paul Goldberg, M.P.H., D.C., founder of the Goldberg-Tener Clinic for Chronic Disease Reversal. “Seven of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. are a result of chronic disease conditions.”

According to the National Survey of Children’s Health, 40 percent of school-aged children have a chronic disease such as asthma, obesity or allergies, and the National Council on Aging reports that 80 percent of seniors over 65 have at least one chronic condition and 68 percent have two or more. Typical chronic conditions of seniors include hypertension, high cholesterol, arthritis, cardiac disease and diabetes.

“The medical approach to chronic conditions focuses on pharmaceutical applications involving increasing amounts of immunosuppressants, steroids, opioids, antibiotics and biological drugs; none of which target root causes of chronic disease and all of which come with a long list of serious, sometimes fatal, side effects,” Goldberg said.

Doctors of chiropractic generally evaluate patients for the following to promote good health:

  • Biomechanical / neurological factors
  • Biochemical / nutritional factors
  • Stress related issues contributing to the patient’s health

“A doctor of chiropractic’s training includes a focus on prevention and protective measures that enhance a patient’s ability to meet the challenges today’s chronic disease-prone society faces. Our orientation is to promote a well-functioning nervous system and structural well-being through chiropractic care along with education on preventive steps patients can take to safeguard their health. This would include factors such as obtaining appropriate amounts of sunlight, adequate activity balanced with sufficient sleep, a health promoting diet and reduction of stressful and toxic influences and exposures,” Goldberg said.

“Appropriate chiropractic care, coupled with patient education, can enhance patients’ resistance to acute health issues and help in the prevention of chronic disease conditions,” he concluded.
